The origin of the Negroni takes place in 1919 in Florence, Italy at the Caffè Casoni, when the noble Count Camillo Negroni asked that the bartender replace the club soda in his Americano with gin. True or not, the Negroni is a simple yet distinctive drink, made of equal parts gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth.
1 oz gin
1 oz Campari
1 oz sweet vermouth
1 dashes orange bitters (optional)
garnish with a flamed orange peel
Add all of the ingredients except the garnish to an old fashioned glass filled with ice and stir.
To garnish with a flamed orange peel, cut a large oval (about 1"x2") of zest from an orange. Hold it between your thumb and index finger, a bit above the edge of the glass. Light a match and hold it between the orange zest and the glass. Slowly squeeze the edges of the zest together, folding it in half. This should create a spray mist of citrus oils, which ignite in little sparks over the glass. I suggest you practice this by yourself a few times before attempting to impress your guests.
